Education is the foundation of Exxaro’s Sustainable Growth and Impact Strategy. Being number four of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), education is not only seen as key to growing and developing communities, but as a tool that enables and empowers the young learners of today to become the leaders of tomorrow. To achieve this, Exxaro’s focused education strategy equips educators, learners and stakeholders with the right tools and resources needed to make quality education accessible to all. From scholarships to hearing aids, wheelchairs and matric learner support programmes, Exxaro has spent the past year creating a better future for all through the power of education.
THANKS TO OUR BELFAST MINE
Hearing is key to learning and development. That is why our Belfast Mine teamed up with Vision for Change to implement an audiology programme that helps young learners in the Emakhazeni Local Municipality.
The programme, which supports the hearing needs of young learners in the district, has already screened over 468 learners from Emakhazeni Boarding School and Morelig Combined School and helped 85 more leaners undergo a wax removal procedure. Two learners also received hearing aids to help enhance their learning experience.
“The Audiology programme has enabled learners with hearing challenges to cope better in their quest to learn,” said Majama Sindane, Manager of the Emakhazeni Circuit.
It is also because of this dynamic partnership that learners within Emakhazeni host communities received eye tests and spectacles in the previous two years.
“We continue to empower our people by addressing the issues affecting them. Hence Exxaro continues to introduce social impact initiatives that seek to better the lives of the people from our host communities and school pupils,” said a proud Musa Mabasa, Belfast’s Business Unit Manager.

Grootegeluk Mine recently joined forces with the Waterberg District Municipality and Lephalale Local Municipality to donate 20 electric wheelchairs for learners living with disabilities in Lephalale.
The handing over of the electric wheelchairs to selected learners at Sedibeng Special School, demonstrates in a small way what’s possible when Exxaro delivers on our DE&I strategy. In this case we are delivering on the pillar of creating an all inclusive environment for people living with disabilities, not only within Exxaro but also within our broader communities.
One of the wheelchair recipients spoke about how her new wheels will open up more opportunities for her and support her dreams.

Ms Mabotja, Circuit Manager of the Ellisras Circuit, was full of praise for Exxaro saying,
“Thank you for always assisting the Department of Education and being available when most needed.”
