SUSTAINABILITY SUMMIT GOES “BACK TO BASICS” FOR SAFETY
On 20 April, Exxaro’s 2023 Sustainability Summit in Lephalale brought industry leaders, experts and stakeholders together to discuss safety and sustainability under the theme “back to basics in operational safety by eliminating repeat incidents.”
The annual event celebrates the group’s sustainability achievements while reflecting on Exxaro’s safety, health, employee wellness and environmental performance. This year the event provided the opportunity for industry partners and employees from all business units to network, share best practice and discuss new ideas around these critical issues affecting our industry.
The day started with a moment of silence to honour the Mining Industry’s fallen heroes, reminding delegates that safety is important, and we need to join forces to work towards Zero Harm.
Dr Nombasa Tsengwa, Exxaro CEO, and Geoffrey Qhena, Exxaro Board Chairperson, emphasised the need for a renewed commitment to the principles of operational safety by “going back to basics” and reminded delegates of the role that every employee plays in upholding these principles.
“It is important for us to rise up and ask, how can I play a role in ensuring that not only is Exxaro sustainable, but also the communities in which we find ourselves and how do we contribute positively?” said Geoffrey Qhena.
