EXXARO CEO HONOURED AT

SAWIMA 20th
ANNIVERSARY

It was a double celebration for women in mining on 24 November 2023. Not only did the South African Women in Mining Association (SAWIMA) celebrate its 20th Anniversary, but it also honoured our CEO, Dr Nombasa with a certificate of appreciation for her enormous contribution to the industry in the past two decades.

The glitzy gala dinner, held at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, was preceded by a conference that celebrated the many milestones and successes achieved by SAWIMA since its inception in 1999. During those early years, there was an alarming absence of women’s participation in the mining industry and today, thanks to organisations like SAWIMA and leaders like Dr Nombasa, women are changing the industry, from the inside out.

Three ways SAWIMA supports women in mining:

Assists women mining groups, particularly in the formal economy, to obtain mineral rights and operate businesses in the mining sector.

Addresses socio-economic challenges facing women in the mining sector.

Promotes women empowerment in the mining sector, in accordance with the provisions of the Mining Charter.

The mine invited local stakeholders from all four towns – Belfast, Machadodorp, Dullstroom and Waterval Boven – in the Emakhazeni Local Municipality. Of the 10 stakeholders that presented their ideas, five made it to the top five and received prizes for their participation. The winning presentation won a laptop and generator while the four runners-up each won a generator.

Thank you to all the participants for taking the time to present your business ideas and congratulations to all the winners.”
