BEWARE: JOB SCAMS INCREASE BY 81%

With unemployment at an all-time high of 32.9%, many desperate job seekers fall victim to job scams, where fraudsters post fictitious job opportunities on social media to steal personal information and money from unsuspecting victims.

Types of job scams

My ImageJob placement service scams

Scammers pose as job placement companies or recruitment agents to promote fraudulent or non-existent job vacancies. They normally charge a fee for their services.

My ImageFake job postings

Fraudsters use Facebook platform features, such as Groups and Marketplace to publish fraudulent job listings and approach potential victims.

Exxaro’s Forensic Investigations team reported an 81.25%
increase in job scams between 1 January to 31 May 2024,
compared to the same period last year.

RED FLAGS

How to identify a legitimate Exxaro job opportunity:

Unsolicited job offers

Exxaro follows a formal recruitment process and will never reach
out to anyone on social media and offer them employment.

Unprofessional communication

A fake job advertisement will often be poorly formatted and have obvious grammatical errors. Common errors include “drives code 10 & 14”, “leanership”, “plasting” and “Exxaro Matla Coal Mine in Limpopo Lephalale”.

Upfront payment is requested

At no point in the recruitment process would Exxaro request payment of any kind.

Web-based email accounts

Beware of Gmail and Yahoo email
addresses that mimic Exxaro addresses.
The most frequently used email
addresses are:

Request to submit ID documents or
bank statements

Exxaro will not request sensitive personal information until the candidate has accepted the offer of employment in writing.

The hiring person gives their cellphone number as the contact number

Contact should only be made through an office telephone number during the recruitment process.

Request to complete an “Outward Bound” medical form

Exxaro’s medical examinations will only be conducted after the candidate has accepted a written offer of employment.

What Can I Do?

Always verify (via legitimate contact details) the legitimacy of the job offers and recruiters.

Exxaro will post available jobs at:
https://www.exxaro.com/careers/ for available positions.

LEEUWPAN MINE EMPOWERS LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS

On 6 May, Leeuwpan Mine reinforced its commitment to economic empowerment and community development with the launch of its Enterprise Supplier Development (ESD) programme at Potgieter Farm.

This initiative, a key component of the mine’s Social and Labour Plans (SLP), aims to nurture local entrepreneurs and stimulate sustainable growth in the region. Nine entrepreneurs, each representing diverse industries and backgrounds, were chosen based on their potential to generate employment opportunities and impact the local economy within their communities.

Key to the programme’s success is its partnership with Raizcorp, an entrepreneurial development organisation, with extensive expertise in business incubation and innovation. Raizcorp will provide mentorship, training, and networking opportunities, helping participants to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship. The programme will also provide holistic support tailored to meet the specific needs of each participant.

In the coming months, the selected entrepreneurs will engage in a training programme covering key areas like business strategy, financial management, marketing, and networking.

Through the ESD programme, Leeuwpan Mine aims to foster local talent and ensure sustainable economic development, with the goal of empowering entrepreneurs to thrive and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Councillor Buda, the Mayor of Delmas, praised Exxaro’s dedication to community development and job creation, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in driving socio-economic transformation and promoting inclusive growth.
