Nurturing hope and compassion
The team at Belfast Mine collaborated with eMakhazeni Municipality, Eskom, and other partners to bring Madiba cheer to Die Kinder Huis for orphaned and at-risk children. The event highlighted the team’s dedication to community welfare and sustainable impact, donating essential goods for the home, including non-perishables, toiletries, blankets, toys, and groceries. By establishing a long-term partnership with the home and launching their employee volunteerism programme, Belfast Mine aims to create a nurturing environment for children in need, embodying Mandela’s principles of compassion and community solidarity.

Uplifting the community
In celebration of Mandela’s birthday, Amakhala Emoyeni Windfarm and its BBBEE partners, Cookhouse Community Trust and Bedford Community Trust, launched several impactful initiatives in Cookhouse and Bedford throughout July.
Cookhouse unveiled Ikhala Community Radio FM, their first community radio station, funded by the Amakhala Emoyeni Cookhouse Community Trust, in partnership with George Meko. Over 300 community members attended the launch at Madiba Hall. The R1.9 million studio aims to connect locals to information around health, education and job opportunities and will create 20 new jobs, in addition to the 17 presenters selected from the surrounding communities.

The Templeton School received a state of- the-art computer lab from the Amakhala Emoyeni Bedford Community Trust. This R600k investment brings 32 computers, two TVs, WiFi, and a presentation screen to a community where 90% of learners can’t access a computer. The Trust also partnered with the Nelson Mandela University to train two unemployed locals to provide computer lessons to students and teachers.

Bedford celebrated the graduation of its first intake of six students from the local Apprentice Culinary Training Centre, a collaboration between the Kempston Group and the Amakhala Emoyeni Bedford Trust. The event, held at the Duke of Bedford Hotel, highlighted the success of this partnership in creating a skilled local workforce. All graduates secured permanent employment at the hotel, with one student pursuing further education in hospitality.
These heartfelt initiatives across our business units are more than just acts of service; they are a testament to Exxaro’s unwavering commitment to creating lasting, positive change in our communities.
Thank you to all the teams who worked tirelessly to ensure that the initiatives were successful!
