REFLECTING ON OUR ANNUAL LEADERSHIP
SAFETY DAY:
COMMITMENT AND KEY TAKEAWAYS
On 17 October, we marked our Annual Leadership Safety Day, a day dedicated to reaffirming Exxaro’s commitment to safety across all operations. This year’s theme, “7 Deadly Signs,” highlighted key factors that can lead to High-Potential Incidents (HPIs) and fatalities. Leadership Safety Day serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility we share to create and uphold a safe working environment.
Our CEO, Dr Nombasa, opened the day with a message on the importance of making safety a priority, both in and outside of work. Throughout the day, Exco members visited business units to engage with employees on critical safety issues, underscoring Exxaro’s commitment to safety excellence.
Key Observations and Actions from Leadership Safety Day:
Visible Felt Leadership (VFL)
Strengthening VFL as a proactive tool for monitoring and enhancing safety performance.
Risk Management
Ensuring consistent hazard identification and control practices through refresher training, particularly in Mini-HIRA, to keep safety at the forefront of every task.
Induction Programme
Refining the induction process to provide clear, digestible standards for new employees, without overwhelming them. The colour-coded hard hat system at Grootegeluk, which helps identify employees who may need extra support, was noted as best practice.
Business Partner Integration
Aligning business partners with Exxaro’s values and safety culture by involving their teams in Exxaro’s safety initiatives for shared commitment and collaboration.
Leadership Safety Day not only celebrated milestones like Grootegeluk’s impressive 12-year safety record but also highlighted areas where we can continue improving.
As we move forward, let’s renew our commitment to making safety our top priority, every day and every shift.
Khetha Ukuphepha! Choose to be safe!
