On Friday, 17 January 2025, Grootegeluk Mine proudly handed over four new classrooms and a 1 000-capacity school hall to Nelsonskop Primary School where Marapong is. This milestone, aligned with our Social and Labour Plan (SLP) commitments, is the result of strong collaboration between Exxaro, the local government, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), and our community stakeholders.

This initiative is more than just an infrastructure project – it’s testament to our ongoing commitment to investing in our communities and creating lasting value. Education remains a cornerstone of our Social Impact strategy and plays a crucial role in our broader Sustainable Growth and Impact (SG&I) strategy. We firmly believe that fostering socio-economic development starts with empowering young learners.

Addressing a Growing Need

Lephalale’s rapid expansion, driven by economic opportunities such as the Medupi Power Station, has placed immense pressure on local schools, leaving many children without access to classrooms. The new facilities at Nelsonskop Primary represent more than just additional space; they are a beacon of opportunity and hope for the next generation.

Beyond the Handover: Our Ongoing Commitment

Our investment in education in Lephalale extends far beyond this project:

Early Childhood Development (ECD): Exxaro supports 44 ECD centres in Lephalale and will soon open a satellite ECD facility just 1km from Nelsonskop Primary. These programmes play a vital role in preparing young learners for primary school and beyond.

Digital Access: Nelsonskop is one of 26 schools in Lephalale where Exxaro is rolling out WiFi infrastructure. With live internet access now available, we are driving digital literacy and bridging the digital divide, ensuring that every learner is equipped for the future.
