Energy Footprint

Exxaro’s energy solutions business, Cennergi, in collaboration with G7 Renewable Energies, has reached an exciting milestone – securing a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply 140MW of wind power to Northam Platinum. This achievement strengthens our commitment to a low-carbon future and accelerates the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

Karreebosch, owned 80% by Cennergi and 20% by G7, is located between the towns of Sutherland in the Northern Cape and Matjiesfontein in the Western Cape. The wind farm will supply clean electricity to Northam Platinum’s operations through a 20-year PPA, with the energy being wheeled via the national grid. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, Karreebosch will enhance industrial energy security in South Africa while reinforcing Exxaro’s leadership in the renewable energy sector.

However, Karreebosch is more than just a power project – it’s a commitment to positive, long-term impact. The wind farm will create approximately 1,030 construction jobs and 17 permanent operational roles, providing much-needed economic upliftment to local communities. Additionally, dedicated social impact initiatives in Sutherland, Laingsburg, and Matjiesfontein will focus on education, skills development, healthcare, and early childhood development, ensuring lasting socio-economic benefits.

Karreebosch will add 112MW to Cennergi’s current 297MW capacity, increasing our total managed renewable energy capacity to 409MW. This expansion is a crucial step toward our ambitious 2030 target of 1.6GW, solidifying Cennergi’s role as a leading independent power producer in South Africa.

Cennergi Managing Director, Leon Groenewald, emphasises that this milestone reflects Exxaro’s unwavering dedication to decarbonisation and diversification, aligning with our Sustainable Growth & Impact strategy. With an investment of ZAR 4.7 billion, the project is strategically structured to balance financial viability and environmental sustainability.

“Thank you for your continued support as we drive innovative and responsible energy solutions that not only benefit our business but also empower the communities we serve. Together, we are shaping a cleaner, more sustainable future,” Groenewald added.
