Day 1: Market Day highlights
We kicked off Day 1 of the 2025 CEO Safety Summit with more than just conversations about safety – we began with a celebration of empowerment, entrepreneurship, and shared progress.
As part of our pre – summit activities, we proudly hosted a vibrant Market Day showcasing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) from Delmas, one of our host communities. These businesses are part of Exxaro’s Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) programme, which supports local entrepreneurs with tools, funding, training, and market access to grow and thrive.
From food vendors to creative makers and service providers, the Market Day wasn’t just a display of products – it was a powerful demonstration of how Exxaro’s impact extends beyond operations and into the heart of our communities.
More than just a warm – up to the Safety Summit, the day reminded us that when we talk about safety and sustainability, we’re also talking about people, prosperity, and purpose.
Together, we are Powering Possibility for our communities and proving that safety and social upliftment can – and must – go hand in hand.
One Voice, One Exxaro – Reflecting on the 2025 CEO Safety Summit
On 11 April 2025, over 2,000 Exxaro employees and stakeholders came together to reflect on our safety journey and officially launch our refreshed safety strategy: “One Voice – Safety Always, All the Way.” This year’s CEO Safety Summit was proudly hosted by the Leeuwpan Business Unit, whose long – standing safety legacy set the perfect tone for a summit grounded in care, leadership, and unity.
The event brought together our leadership teams, business partners, unions, regulators (including the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) , and industry stakeholders – all aligned in our shared vision of Zero Harm. It was a powerful reminder that safety is not a slogan but a culture, shaped by our choices every day.
“To all our employees, safety is important. We must always do things safely. Zero Harm is achievable, but it takes each of us to make it happen,” said our Chief Safety Officer and CEO, Ben Magara.
“For me, safety is a state of mind, and working safely is a condition of employment. If it’s not safe, do not ever do it — not in my name, not in yours too. There is always enough time to do things safely and meet our targets. Zero Harm is achievable, and all injuries are preventable. There is nothing small about any injury.”
Honouring a legacy of safety excellence
As a group, we celebrated 31 consecutive fatality-free months – a significant milestone achieved through consistent leadership, frontline ownership, and a culture that prioritises safety above all else.
We also recognised the remarkable site-specific achievements across the group:
- Leeuwpan – 35 years fatality – free
- FerroAlloys – 27 years fatality – free
- Grootegeluk – 12 years fatality – free
- Mines-in-Closure – 15 years fatality-free
- Matla – 8 years fatality-free
- Belfast – 2 years fatality – free
- Cennergi – Zero fatalities since inception
These numbers reflect more than time – they reflect people, processes, and a relentless commitment to doing things the right way, every time.
One Voice: We are #WINAS
The summit also marked the official launch of our refreshed One Voice Safety Strategy, guided by five key pillars under the #WINAS framework:
W – We talk about safety in “one voice” because we are one Exxaro
I – I am a leader. Safety starts with me.
N – No HIRA, No work
A – A zero-tolerance approach will save my life
S – Safety training is for life
These pillars are more than a framework – they are a daily call to action for every employee, leader, and partner in our ecosystem.
Passing the Baton: Belfast Announced as 2026 Host
As we looked to the future, we celebrated the announcement that Belfast will host the 2026 CEO Safety Summit!
To every person across Exxaro who contributes to safety with consistency, heart, and accountability: we see you, and we thank you.
