The commitment to education in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality (VKLM) continues to yield remarkable results, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Exxaro’s Leeuwpan mine, GoMaths, and other key partners. During the matric awards ceremony held on 7 February 2025, Exxaro reaffirmed its dedication to academic excellence by recognising the top 10 performing learners of 2024 in the VKLM circuit with brand-new laptops, bags, and headphones.

Tebogo Leepile, Exxaro’s Group Manager for Social Impact, expressed immense pride in the achievements of the learners, particularly highlighting a 22.9% improvement in the matric pass rate at Swartklip Combined School.

“It’s an honour to be part of this historic moment. The matric class of 2024 has made us proud, and we celebrate their hard work and determination,” said Tebogo.

She emphasised the role of education in addressing socio-economic challenges in mining communities, stating,

“We believe systemic issues like unemployment and poverty can only be tackled through collaboration. Partnerships like these allow us to make a lasting impact.”

The GoMaths initiative, led by Lebang Nong, has played a crucial role in this success. Contracted to support five local schools, GoMaths provided Grade 9 and Grade 12 learners with academic assistance in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Accounting, alongside additional support in Life Sciences, Economics, and Geography.

“Our goal is to maintain a minimum pass rate of 65%, ensuring university access and potential bursary opportunities,” Nong explained.

Thanks to these interventions, the Victor Khanye Circuit saw a significant improvement, with its overall matric pass rate increasing from 78.8% in 2023 to 83.2% in 2024. Learners were also provided with scientific calculators and textbooks, ensuring they had the necessary tools to excel.

Recognising the outstanding performance of the top 10 matriculants, Exxaro’s Leeuwpan mine awarded each of them with laptops, backpacks, and headphones, equipping them for their next academic journey.

Tebogo commended their dedication and hinted at further educational support in the future. “We have heard the call for STEM and school management support, and we are committed to exploring additional ways to assist learners in their higher education aspirations,” she concluded.
