2023 – THE YEAR OF CHAMPIONS
A MESSAGE FROM DR NOMBASA TSENGWA, EXXARO CEO

As another year draws to a close, one marked by fatality free milestones and double World Cup wins, our CEO, Dr Nombasa Tsengwa reflects on a year of new explorations.
It was a tough year for our business and industry. But despite some hard knocks and big challenges, Exxaro took a leaf out of the Springbok playbook and rose to every challenge, proving itself to be as resilient and brilliant as the people and strategies behind its many successes.
“We are champions because we never give up. We are champions because we know how to come together, align our actions with our strategies and find new and innovative ways to make it over the line. So as I look back at 2023, I want us to honour every big and small achievement and take the time to celebrate the people, passion and purpose that will continue to make us champions on our playing field in 2024.”

We achieved a 41% increase in Group Revenue in our FY22 results.

We achieved a Level 2 BBBEE scorecard, with an overall score of 95.52 – the second-highest score in Exxaro’s verification history.

We were certified as a “Top Employer in South Africa” for 2023 for the fourth time.

We were recognised in the 2023 Bloomberg Gender Equity Initiative (GEI).

We launched our revised DE&I strategy.

We created a new Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Policy, making us a more inclusive and equitable place to work.

In the last 10 years we have donated over R26 million to the Minerals Education Trust Fund (METF), which supports tertiary minerals education in South Africa.

We achieved a 57.6% participation rate (up from 33.6% in 2020) and an aggregate score of 3.78 (above the benchmark of
3.70) in our 2023 Culture and Engagement Survey.

Matla and Grootegeluk hosted their first Digital Indabas, in line with Exxaro’s Digital@Exxaro journey.
In a show of unity and gees, the conneXXion hosted a Springbok send-off on the Thursday before the Rugby World Cup final, bringing good food and good people together in support of the Bokke. Dressed in their best green and gold, everyone brought their A-game to an event that showed what is possible when we’re all united in our diversity.
