GROOTEGELUK BRINGS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN TO WATERBERG

Our flagship Grootegeluk Mine recently sponsored a childhood cancer awareness campaign hosted by the Ellisras Hospital in the Waterberg district.

The event, which was themed “Survival Is Possible #ThroughTheirHands,” emphasised early intervention by parents and guardians, who are the first to observe any warning signs.

A host of inspiring speakers shared their stories, including Ellisras doctors and nurses, cancer survivors, and patients. Learners and teachers from various schools in the district also participated on the day.

Notable attendees included Ellisras Hospital management, Lephalale PHC, Exxaro Grootegeluk teams, Traditional Office Leaders, Old Mutual, pastors, and even Bishop Maseko.

Daniel Madibana, Stakeholder Affairs Manager at Grootegeluk Mine, emphasised the company’s support for healthcare institutions in Lephalale and spoke about the connection between a healthy community and workplace productivity.

Sister Tshepi dispelled some myths about cancer, including misconceptions that:

  • Cancer only affects white people
  • Cancer is contagious
  • Cancer is a death sentence

“I would like to commend the important work that Ellisras Hospital is doing for its community, and express how honoured Exxaro is to be invited to such an important awareness drive,” Grootegeluk Mine’s GM, Mr Lazarus Ramashilabele.

GROOTEGELUK SPONSORS ‘LAST PUSH’ FOR LEPHALALE MATRICS

Grootegeluk Mine sponsored the ‘Last Push’ event for 2023 Matric learners in Lephalale, hosted by the Limpopo Department of Education.

The day featured top speakers including Limpopo MEC of Education Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, the Lephalale Local Municipality Mayor, District Councillors, and representatives from Medupi Power Station.

Daniel Madibana, Stakeholder Affairs Manager at Grootegeluk, highlighted

initiatives supporting learners, such as the ‘Kids on Bike’ programme, promoting physical activities alongside academics, career exhibitions, and the Women in Mining (WiM) initiative mentoring 30 girls from Tielelo Secondary School.

The MEC’s Office, anticipating an 80% pass rate from the Limpopo Class of 2023, encouraged learners to take the “last push” seriously by participating in study groups, getting enough rest, asking questions, and avoiding distractions like social media.
