Exxaro’s Professionals in Training (PIT) and an intern recently attended the Mining Indaba, where they hosted the Exxaro stand and attended key discussions throughout the conference, which was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 6 to 9 February 2023.
We asked our 2023 hosts to share their highlights from this year’s conference and how it spoke to the theme of “Unlocking African Mining Investment: Stability, Security, and Supply”. This is what they had to say:
Cherise Horn, Metallurgical Engineering PIT, liked how discussions around “how every gram of coal counts” spoke to the need for a more sustainable and responsible way of
mining. She was also excited to learn more about the role that technology will play in the future of mining and how we can learn from other industries about key actions like decarbonisation. She believes “the opportunities that Exxaro creates are endless.”
Thando Nkomo, Intern Stakeholder Affairs, found the panel discussions on day two, where Exxaro spoke about zero waste, water scarcity and the circular economy very inspiring.
“Another way Exxaro is unlocking new possibilities is through its supply chain. Exxaro sources from small, medium and micro enterprises to help reduce poverty in our country.”
Duduzile Nxumalo, Civil Engineering PIT, thought that day three’s discussion about the future of minerals was a fascinating dive into the conservation of energy and the opportunities that renewable energy presents. “We are going to manage a Just Transition, ensuring that our skills are transferred from our current coal focus to the new minerals we are going into.”
Marubini Ndou, Electrical Engineering PIT, said that day four’s discussions about transitions and transformation were very inspiring. “Women empowerment is a big thing and I think Exxaro is taking the lead on this. We are unlocking possibilities through women empowerment.” Being future fit while still meeting obligations was also a key discussion and one, he believes Exxaro is ready for.
