GROOTEGELUK DRIVES
“BACK-TO-SCHOOL” CAMPAIGN
WITH CONTRACTORS
Grootegeluk spearheaded a dynamic back-to-school campaign in Lephalale, rallying employees and contractors to create and distribute over 300 hygiene packs to learners at Raserite Secondary School.
In a show of team effort, contractors like PBSA Logistics, Consultants, Bonec, Mei Projects and Mokolo Armature Winders and Mining Supplies joined employees in putting together hygiene packs which included essentials like lotion, soap, toothpaste, body spray, sanitary towels and shoe polish.
The handover event, which was supported by representatives from unions, the Department of Education, and Exxaro contractors, not only delivered the packs but also inspired and
motivated the learners to start the year with a positive mindset.
This successful collaboration proves that together we can ignite possibilities for our community and beyond.

SPEKBOOM
TREE PROJECT
DEEPLY ROOTED
IN SUSTAINABLE
MINING
Have you heard of the Spekboom – South Africa’s wonder plant that not only acts like a carbon sponge, but improves the quality of the air we breathe? Exxaro has been planting Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) at our operations, as part of our carbon offset work. The project aligns with Exxaro’s aim to adopt nature-based solutions that enable
biodiversity protection and restoration and positively contribute to our broader social impact.
The Spekboom tree was selected due to its carbon absorption capabilities and its ability to grow in almost any environment. This offset project is a cost-effective way of addressing climate change, the biodiversity crises and land degradation. It also aligns with Exxaro’s decarbonisation strategy to offset direct operational emissions (scope 1- fugitive emissions).
Five reasons why Spekboom is hailed as
a super plant:
- Climate Change Champion
Acts as a carbon sponge, combating climate change and air pollution.

- Easy Cultivation
Indigenous to the Eastern Cape, it requires minimal planting efforts.
- Water-Wise Resilience
Survives on as little as 250-350mm of water annually.
- Nutrient Rich
High in Vitamin C, making it a nutritious addition to diets.
- Medicinal Benefits
Offers relief for various ailments, from dehydration to skin conditions, showcasing its versatility and benefits beyond environmental impact.
