DONATION OF 300 SCHOOL SHOES HELPS LEARNERS STEP INTO SUCCESS

Grootegeluk Mine donated over 300 pairs of school shoes to students in need, ensuring that more young learners can attend school comfortably during the cold winter months.

“Exxaro is involved in many and varied projects to help support improved access to education, like career expos and the provision of bursaries. The donation of shoes is yet another way Exxaro is helping to remove social barriers.”

The Ba Kgoro ya Kauletsi (Traditional Authority Representative) thanked the mine for its generosity and encouraged the students to make the most of their gifts, saying, “education is crucial and these shoes should inspire you to love school.”

Grootegeluk remains steadfast in its support for the community and its commitment to nurturing the potential of future leaders.

GROOTEGELUK BRINGS WINTER WARMTH TO THE ELDERLY

As the cold winter weather settled in, Grootegeluk showed its commitment to supporting the elderly members of its community, donating warm shoes and grocery hampers to the residents of an old age home in Marapong. The donation, which aligns with the mine’s ongoing commitment

to the wellbeing of the Lephalale community, was met with warm embraces from the centre managers and heartfelt gratitude from the recipients. The mine takes pride in supporting its community and ensuring that its elderly members stay warm and well-nourished during the cold winter months.

FROM CHALLENGES TO OPPORTUNITIES

Three PITs reflect on their PIT journey with Exxaro

Exxaro’s commitment to nurturing talent is exemplified by our Professionals in Training (PIT) programme. Three PITs, Nsovo Mkhavele (Mechanical Engineering), Constance Mashile (Electrical Engineering), and Kate Netshipale (Mechanical Engineering) share their lessons and experiences as future leaders in this first-of-its-kind mini-master class by PITs for PITs. This initiative embraces the values of being empowered to grow and contribute, along with an outward mindset.

Time management and prioritisation

Moving from academic to professional time management is no easy task. Nsovo shared, “effective prioritisation and proactive planning were essential to managing my Structured Development Plan (SDP) elements, leading people, running projects, and attending meetings”.

Kate added, “I treated my SDP like a project, using tools like calendars and trackers to monitor my progress monthly “.

Influencing leaders and coaches

Navigating the SDP involved working with various leaders, each with unique approaches. “Understanding my coach’s focus on adding value to the business helped me align my goals with theirs,” explained Constance.

“Clear and open communication is key. Regular meetings with my Business Unit coach and detailed reports on my progress, helped align goals and address concerns proactively,” said Kate.

Importance of the Government Certificate of Competency
(GCC) Route

The GCC route offers comprehensive exposure and experience.

Kate shared, “the GCC is crucial for advancing my engineering career in the mining environment. It qualifies me for greater responsibilities and leadership roles, enhancing my technical knowledge and problem-solving abilities”.

Nsovo added, “ having a GCC means that I can act as a ticket engineer taking responsibility for the safety of equipment and people at Exxaro”.

Staying with Exxaro

Exxaro’s inclusive culture and commitment to employee development have been key factors in retaining our PITs. Constance agreed saying, “the progressive nature of the company, embracing change, innovation, inclusion, and diversity, makes me feel valued and excited to contribute to its future”.

“The supportive and innovative work environment, along with access to experienced mentors, makes it a perfect fit for me,” said Kate.

Practical Advice

“Align your exposure elements with the Mine Health and Safety Act to make exam preparation easier,” suggested Nsovo, while Kate suggested practicing regularly with past exam papers, managing your time carefully during exams, and staying updated with industry standards.

We are pleased to announce that Nsovo, Constance, and Kate passed both papers (GCC Law & Plant exams) on their first attempt. This is an exceptional accomplishment, as it is rare for applicants to pass these challenging exams on the first try; most must re-apply. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.
