MAFUBE RAISES THE BAR
IN DRILLING PERFORMANCE

The Mafube team has achieved a remarkable turnaround in drilling performance, transforming a
former weak spot into a strength. Through a 50-50 partnership between Exxaro and Thungela,
Mafube has shown what’s possible with determination, teamwork, and focused effort.

Facing issues with fleet reliability, the team prioritised essential maintenance to enhance performance
and ensure sustainability. But they didn’t stop there. Embracing a “no stone left unturned” approach,
Mafube tackled every factor that had previously held back drilling output.

With a renewed focus on operational efficiency and a strong sense of teamwork, Mafube’s drilling
rates have increased by 20% over the past three years, achieving an impressive 98% accuracy. Each
drill now averages 15,000 metres per month, surpassing industry standards, with Drill 007 setting a
record of 20,000 metres in August.

This achievement is a testament to the dedication and resilience of the Mafube team.
Congratulations to everyone involved for setting a new standard of excellence. Your hard work and
commitment are an inspiration—keep up the fantastic work!

A JOURNEY OF POWERING POSSIBILITIES:
BERNADETT’S GROWTH AT EXXARO

Promoted in October 2023 as Specialist ER & Compliance at our Belfast Mine, Bernadett Dlamini is filled with gratitude for this career
milestone. In a candid conversation with XXplore, Bernadett shared her journey, hoping to inspire others through her story.

A Journey of Growth
Bernadett joined Exxaro in 2012 as a temporary general worker, relieving someone on maternity leave. Her role as a cleaner brought her close to the HR department, sparking a curiosity and passion for people-centered work. “I’d ask questions about leave days, payroll, and SAP, which opened doors for me,” she recalls. This curiosity didn’t go unnoticed, and with the guidance of leaders like Sherlonia Bosman, her potential was nurtured. An IDP was developed for her, allowing her to assist in HR functions, where she gained valuable exposure.

Over the years, Bernadett’s career blossomed as she progressed through roles, from Shaft Clerk to Contractor Administrator, and ultimately to her current position. “Every role taught me something new, and each step was a building block toward my career goals,” she reflects. “Through hard work and support from colleagues, I grew into the generalist HR role, and last October, I transitioned to Specialist ER & Compliance.”

Embracing Challenges and Learning New Skills
Despite the challenges, Bernadett’s dedication never wavered. “When I took on new responsibilities, I leaned on my colleagues and learned as I went. It’s about building confidence and pushing through.” Her positive outlook kept her going, even during intense recruitment drives and the complexities of HR processes.
Passion for People and Education
Born a people-person, Bernadett enjoys her role as a People & Performance agent, helping to align the company’s culture with strategic goals. Her educational journey has also been transformative. Starting with a Grade 12 qualification, she completed an HR diploma in 2017 (self-funded) and graduated with an Advanced HRM certificate in 2023, fully funded by Exxaro.

Beyond Work
A self-described introvert, Bernadett values family time and is active in her church on Sundays. Her goals include personal growth, spiritual discovery, and one day moving into a senior position where she can mentor other women.

Advice to Aspiring Colleagues
“Exxaro truly powers possibilities. Take ownership of your career; the resources and support are there if you reach for them,” she advises.
