BELFAST DIGITAL AND CONNECTED
MINE’S LAPTOP DONATION EMPOWERS
UNEMPLOYED GRADUATES

Belfast Digital and Connected Mine recently sponsored the Emakhazeni Unemployed Graduate Organisation with two laptops and a voucher to the value of R20 000 as part of its ongoing commitment to enabling the communities in which it operates.

As a digital and connected mine, Belfast values education and offers developmental opportunities and bursaries to support our stakeholders in shaping their future. That’s why the Department of Education and its affiliated organisations, like the Emakhazeni Unemployed Graduate Organisation, have long been key stakeholders that the mine supports.

Emakhazeni Unemployed Graduate Organisation is a non-profit that helps Grade 12 pupils apply to higher learning institutions and exposes them to subjects required by the Mining Sector. These pupils come from all four central towns within the Emakhazeni Local Municipality, namely Dullstroom, Machadodorp, Waterval Boven, and Belfast.

The donation will go a long way to helping the organisation continue its excellent work.

“We are now able to communicate with stakeholders timeously and apply for other initiatives meant to empower the young people of Emakhazeni,” said a grateful Clement Mashinini, Chairperson of the Emakhazeni Unemployed Graduates Organisation.

EXXARO HELPS YOUNG LEARNERS
GROW 2 LEARN

Exxaro knows that quality education starts with good nutrition. That’s why Exxaro’s conneXXion volunteering team, recently teamed up with Siyakhana to support seven schools in and around Tshwane to create vegetable gardens.

The programme which launched with great success in three primary schools (Sefako Makgatho, Matseke and Kgabo Primary School in Atteridgeville), has Exxaro employees volunteering to become part of the schools’ support teams. Launches for Olievenhoutbosch and Eesterust Secondary, Philana and Orifile Primary are underway.

The food garden programme is part of Exxaro’s greater commitment to empowering communities by improving learners’ well-being and academic excellence. Exxaro also helped Vision 4 Change roll out their eye-testing programme in all seven schools in its mining host communities. The programme has already benefited 8 798 learners, with 427 learners fitted with prescription spectacles.

In October, Exxaro hosted a career expo for Olievenhoutbosch Secondary School. The event took place in the auditorium at the conneXXion and helped guide learners on the best careers to follow. It also included wise words from a motivational speaker who wrote the book “The Road to Varsity”. The event, which benefited 322 Grade 11 learners, was attended by numerous Higher Education and Training institutions from the performing arts to the medical sciences and civil engineering. Even Sci-Bono and the Department of Transport (environmental awareness) were in attendance.
