EXXARO SUPPORTS FUTURE OF MINING THROUGH MINERALS EDUCATION TRUST FUND
Exxaro is committed to advancing and supporting the future of minerals in South Africa, and that’s why, for the past 10 years, we’ve donated over R26 million to the Minerals Education Trust Fund (METF), which supports tertiary minerals education in South Africa.
The METF was started in 1999 by a group of companies in the mineral industry, to offer a unique collaboration between industry and academia to ensure that the various university departments of Mining, Metallurgy/Chemical Engineering and Geosciences are financially and operationally sustainable. Together, this partnership ensures a strong pipeline of quality graduates for generations to come.
The METF provides its institutional beneficiaries with the financial support they need to supplement their academic salaries in these disciplines.

Did you know?
The METF disbursed over R572 million in grants to funded institutions between 1999 and 2021.
Exxaro actively supports the METF in many ways. Exxaro employees are members of the METF Board and all three subcommittees: Mining, Geoscience and Metallurgy. Exxaro also recently hosted the Geoscience and Metallurgy subcommittee meetings at the conneXXion in June.

Managing capital expenditure is key to driving a successful and sustainable business. That’s why Exxaro launched a Capital Excellence programme to improve its approach to managing capital expenditure.
A series of diagnostics between 2018 and 2021 identified the following critical themes that would assist Exxaro to potentially save between 10 and 25% of capital expenditure in line with the capital target provided:

Baseline & Optimisation

Portfolio Management

Project Development

Project Execution

Systems & Processes

Mindsets & Capabilities
During the Capital Excellence Indaba in July 2022, workshops with key stakeholders identified critical focus areas within these themes and resulted in additional initiatives to improve capital performance.
Through co-creation and collaboration from cross functional teams and BU representatives with minimal outsourced services and resources, the team
developed:
Capital Excellence App
to hold consolidated capital expenditure data in one place and assist with prioritising projects for each BU.
A benefit evaluation tool
to analyse project business cases and provide visibility on project improvements and responsible returns.
Reporting

Improved overall visibility of the Project Portfolio.

Ranking and prioritising BU portfolio projects based on the highest benefits vs capital spent.

Visualise BU high-priority projects to ensure resource support and project lifecycle approval.

Compare projects across the business to be used for capital allocation.

Automate reporting to visualise the project approval dates across the portfolio.
Project Forecasting standard
and training were conducted through the business planning process and budget cycle for 2024 to 2028 to ensure all projects use the same forecasting methodology.
These tools and processes were embedded in the business with the main objective to improve the Capital Portfolio across the organisation. The programme is aimed to continue until end of 2024 with further improvement initiatives. Follow our journey as we continue to drive towards Capital Excellence for Exxaro.

GROOTEGELUK ENGAGES WITH
MINING ETHICALLY

In August Chief Ethics Officer, Rendani Nematswerani, visited Grootegeluk to lead an ethics awareness training, under the theme Mining with Morals, with the 1 000 plus employees in attendance.
The interactive training session, which included case studies, was designed to:
- Clarify ethical standards to help employees understand Exxaro’s ethical standards, values, and expectations and what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.
- Promote ethical decision-making by equipping employees with the knowledge and skills needed to make ethical decisions in various workplace situations.
- Create awareness around potential ethical dilemmas, challenges, and the consequences of unethical behaviour.
- Encourage reporting of unethical behaviour or concerns, without fear of retaliation, through the reporting channels and whistleblower protections.
- Build a culture of integrity through training that contributes to the development of a workplace culture that values integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct.
Proactive and strategic ethics training sessions are key to helping Exxaro shape its ethical culture, reduce risks,
safeguard its reputation and ultimately reach its North Star. The Mining with Morals roadshow is set to continue across the rest of the operations.
