In June, Grootegeluk proudly sponsored the celebration of the Mogol Parkrun’s tenth anniversary. This milestone event drew nearly 200 participants and created a vibrant, communal atmosphere. A special “Memory Lane” was set up to reflect on the past decade, highlighting the lasting impact of consistent efforts to promote healthier communities. Grootegeluk’s commitment to fostering health is evident in their support for initiatives that encourage physical activity, wellbeing, and social connections. The success of the Mogol Parkrun underscores the power of community spirit and the significant health benefits of regular exercise.

Exxaro’s Matla Coal Mine and Overlooked Coal Mine, in collaboration with Emalahleni Local Municipality, held a sod-turning ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction of the Ekungeneni Road in Thubelihle.
The project, which forms part of Exxaro’s Social and Labour Plan, will enhance accessibility and improve the safety of transportation, while providing vital employment and economic opportunities for local residents, contractors and SMMEs.
The Executive Mayor of Emalahleni Local Municipality, Cllr Leah Mabuza, expressed her appreciation for the project and the positive social and economic impact it will have on the local community.
“My heartfelt gratitude goes to Exxaro for their continued work within the Emalahleni Local Municipality, this partnership plays a critical role in enhancing service delivery to the community.”

Matla’s Business Unit (BU) Manager, Mangaliso Sethethi, hosted the mine’s first bi-annual BU Manager’s Roadshow in June. The aim of the session was to engage employees, reiterate the importance of safety in the workplace and share production performance.
Sethethi opened the session by sharing Matla’s safety statistics since 2009, taking employees on a journey of the mine’s performance. Although there has been a steady decline in the number of incidents, the Lost Time Injuries Frequency Rate (LTIFR) remains over 0.7 with 0.20 LTIFR (4 LTIs) since the beginning of 2024.
Sethethi emphasised the need to improve safety, urging employees to ‘Stop and Fix’ by revisiting the Mini Hira when work conditions change.
“We must strive to end the 2024 season with no additional LTIs and scratch-free. Let’s also remember that that ‘zero
harm is possible’.”
Mangaliso Sethethi, Matla’s BU Manager
Sethethi commended the employees for their exceptional performance in 2023 and the first quarter of 2024. Matla exceeded its production targets from 2023 to date and remains committed to powering the country safely.
“With the Short-Wall coming to an end, let me applaud the Short-Wall team for their remarkable contribution to Matla’s overall production.”
Mangaliso Sethethi, Matla’s BU Manager
