IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

Exxaro’s commitment to ensuring the best air quality for both people and the environment will see it developing and implementing effective Air Quality Management in all operations, in line with Greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations and reporting requirements.
The air around us is very important to all living things. Poor air quality can harm our health and the environment. Good air quality refers to when the air we breathe is clean, clear and free from air pollutants like gases, smoke, dust and smog.
Air pollutants from Grootegeluk Coal Mine include dust from air pollution sources such as drilling and blasting, crushing and screening, excavation, handling of mined material, vehicle emissions.

Grootegeluk addresses air quality issues by:
- Discarding dumps. A rehabilitation test project has commenced
- Reducing air pollution through various initiatives, including dust management using wet suppression and chemical suppression on unpaved roads and other exposed areas
- Dust fallout monitoring and measurement
- Actively monitoring multi-pollutants and associated meteorological stations

What does Exxaro’s GHG reduction focus on?
- Increasing the energy efficiency of mine equipment and processes
- Reducing the usage of energy
- Monitoring and managing of Greenhouse emissions
- Raising awareness of air pollution, causes and solutions
- Compliance with regulations and regulatory bodies
A HEALTHY FOOD SOURCE FOR CHILDREN

Exxaro has donated R1.5 million to help World Vision South Africa bring healthy food and hygiene packs to 1.2 million poor and vulnerable families, of which 48 000 are children, to help reduce the impact of COVID-19.
Exxaro’s donation will also be used to create sustainable food sources for two schools and one children’s home in Mpumalanga,
in the form of food gardens which will be used to cook healthy meals for the children. World Vision identified Bonani Primary School, Bonginhlanhla Primary School and Cosmos Children’s Haven as the beneficiaries of these food gardens.
The School Governing Body and Principal welcomed the project by providing space for the food gardens.
“This gardening project is going to make a great impact in our school. The school has a nutrition programme and the garden will supplement what the government gives us,” said the Principal, Mrs Ndwandwe before adding, “Thanks to Exxaro, our kids will now have fresh and healthy food every day.”
