SMME POP-UP MARKET AT

 LEPHALALE MALL

One of the biggest challenges for SMMEs is getting access to markets. That is why Exxaro supported Small Enterprise
Development Agency (SEDA) in hosting a three-day pop-up market at Lephalale Mall from 24-26 March.

The pop-up market invited twenty-two local entrepreneurs from the manufacturing, arts and crafts, agriculture and services
sector to participate in an exhibition under the theme “Loveyourlocalbrands”. The Department of Small Business Development
(DSBD) and Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) also collaborated in this joint effort to promote local SMME brands.

How were the
entrepreneurs selected?

Seda worked with Exxaro’s Stakeholder Affairs function in Lephalale, local business forums, and its client database within the Lephalale Local Municipality to identify the best candidates. Through these engagements, 30 SMMEs were initially recruited to participate in the initiative, with 22 eventually participating on the day.

How were the
entrepreneurs selected?

The selected SMMEs were invited to Seda’s pre-exhibition training, where they gained the knowledge and skills to attract clients, sell their wares, collaborate with other businesses and practice good business etiquette.

Was the market a success?

Sales generation, networking and business to business collaborations were just some of the key wins from the event. The bakery business formed a partnership with another exhibitor to supply bread and other products to a shop in another village. The vegetable exhibitor received positive leads from supply companies who provide school nutrition services around Lephalale. And the local patrons got to engage and support the many talented entrepreneurs from their own communities.
