WOMEN INDABA 2022
WOMEN INDABA 2022 BRINGS GENDER EQUALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY TOGETHER
“Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”
This was the theme of Exxaro’s second annual Women Indaba, which took place on 30 August, rounding off Women’s Month with a range of thought-provoking speakers, topics and panel discussions.
Hosted by Gali Legodi (Strategy and Business Transformation) and Mmangaliso Ntshangase (Professional in Training: Civil Engineering), this all-inclusive hybrid event made sure that all business units were included in the discussions. After all gender equality, like sustainability, is everyone’s business, as Dr Nombasa, CEO of Exxaro reminded us.
Here are some key takeouts from the speakers and discussions of the day:
Dr Nombasa applauded the work that the Women in Mining committees have been doing across the business in creating a platform for women empowerment. She also reminded everyone that, at Exxaro, gender equality is not a “nice to have” but rather a recipe for creating a diverse and representative workforce.
Dr Nombasa also shared some of the key initiatives driving Exxaro’s commitment to gender equality, including:
- Exxaro’s commitment to empowering women in the mining industry by leading the focus area of zero tolerance to Gender Based Violence (GBV), in
partnership with the Minerals Council of SA. - The GBV 100-day challenge, which launched in April, and includes initiatives that not only help raise awareness of sexual harassment in the work place but offer support for women in our business who have encountered incidences of GBV.
Mandima Nengovhela (Senior Employee Relations Specialist) and Sixolile Ngcobo (Senior Advisor: Gender and Sustainable Development from the Commission for Gender Equality of South Africa) gave an update on Exxaro’s 100-day GBV challenge, which engaged 5 200 people and achieved 1 550 in action pledges. Exxaro was the only mine to participate in the challenge.
