Exxaro is embarking on a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) journey to create a representative workforce and culture where all employees are valued, included, and feel free to bring their whole selves to work. This strategy will empower us to create an environment built on trust and respect, free from prejudice, harassment, and discrimination. The DE&I strategy is currently rolling out across the business, with each Business Unit landing it in its own unique way.

Belfast Mine hosts inclusive
panel to launch DE&I Strategy

Belfast Mine recently launched Exxaro’s DE&I strategy, using a panel discussion to engage employees. To highlight the importance of inclusion, the panel discussion comprised “pioneers” from different cultures, religions, races, disability competence, identities, LGBTQIA++ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual), sex, and ethnicity. Belfast Mine sees pioneers as employees who are committed to the strategy and endeavour to live up to it every day.

Ben Matai, Group Manager: HR Coal and Minerals, reminded attendees that DE&I is a journey that benefits everyone.

DE&I is in our DNA and what makes our organisation thrive,” said Musa Mubasa, Belfast’s Business Unit Manager.

Guest speaker, Mabore Sithole, spoke about the importance of making our offices safe spaces, saying, “we need to accommodate each other’s culture and values.”

Grootegeluk DE&I strategy builds inclusive culture

Grootegeluk launched Exxaro’s DE&I strategy during an interactive session engaging over 1 000 employees.

Grootegeluk’s journey started a few years ago, focusing on compliance to ensure better representation for women and persons living with disabilities across the mine.

Their journey has since evolved to align with Grootegeluk’s North Star, where people drive the strategy. Today, the focus is on creating an inclusive environment  where all employees are treated fairly and respectfully and can bring their best selves to work.

The strategy aims to cultivate an inclusive culture that powers the full possibilities of:

  • LGBTQIA++ equity identity
  • Racial equity
  • Disability competence
  • Inclusive culture
  • Supplier diversity and external inclusion
