EXXARO DONATES
R10 MILLION TO GIFT
OF THE GIVERS

South Africa has seen a massive increase in climate change related disasters that have left many communities vulnerable and families in worse off living conditions. That’s why Exxaro recently donated R10 million to the Gift of The Givers Foundation (GGF) – an NGO that supports emergency response efforts in the Kwa-Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces.

DID YOU KNOW:

Between 2019 and 2021, the Western Cape has seen over 8 600 shack fires?

The GGF is the perfect partner to bring aid and relief where it is needed most. As a world-respected organisation that has been operating for 30 years, it has successfully distributed R4.5 billion in aid and operated in 45 countries.

“The Gift of the Givers exemplified, through their commendable work over the years and across the continent, that they are the ideal partner for us to collaborate with in responding to these disasters,” said Dr Nombasa, who praised the work that GGF.

DID YOU KNOW:

The April rains in KZN led to the death of 448 people and the displacement of over 40 000 people?

The donation aligns with Exxaro’s purpose to “power better lives” and be more supportive of vulnerable communities.

“The funds will greatly contribute towards advancing various education infrastructure and the reconstruction of communities,” said Badr Kazi, Director at Gift of the Givers Foundation.

MANKETTI CREATES AFRICA’S
FIRST ALL-FEMALE MOUNTED RANGER UNIT

Manketti Game Reserve, the pride of Exxaro’s conservation efforts, has created an all-female mounted ranger unit – the first of its kind in Africa and possibly the world.

This 22 000-hectare conservation area, which surrounds Exxaro’s Grootegeluk mine at Lephalale, requires constant environmental monitoring and security patrols. This requires a lot of effort on foot and adds up to a lot of petrol and maintenance costs for the patrol vehicles.

That’s why, in 2018, the park launched a pilot project that trained two rangers and four horses to assist Manketti’s conventional field rangers. Four years later, the park has not only expanded the project but created the park’s first all-female mounted ranger unit.

The applicants went through a rigorous one-week selection and training course. None of the ladies had ever handled a horse before and were only qualified as conventional field rangers. After just three days, the trainer was impressed and said,

“I was apprehensive about training women as mounted rangers, but these ladies were without a doubt the best candidates I have ever trained!”

Alice Maphafu, Angelina Nkgweng and Penny Maboyane were appointed as mounted field rangers, while Elelwani Mulaodzi was appointed as Head Mounted Ranger and will be leading the team under the supervision of Manketti’s Chief Ranger.

CENNERGI BRINGS
GOOD ENERGY
TO WINDABA

Cennergi, Exxaro’s renewable energy solutions business, was both an exhibitor and sponsor at this year’s 11th annual Windaba. The Windaba is an interactive platform which aims to be “an inclusive community of stakeholders who contribute to the wind energy market, on the African continent.” This year’s Windaba took place on 12 and 13 October at the CTICC in Cape Town and was hosted by the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA).
