EXXARO WINS AT
COALSAFE 2022
Exxaro was a big award winner at COALSAFE 2022 – a one-day conference held by the South African Colliery Managers’ Association (SACMA) under the theme “sustainable mining sustains us all”.
Every year the event brings mining companies and service providers together in a conference that aims to share best practice, encourage collaboration and offer opportunities to network.
In keeping with the theme, both the speakers and awards highlighted how purposeful and responsible mining, through collaboration, can create an environment that improves the lives of the communities and adds value to all stakeholders.
In addition to winning awards, Exxaro was well represented by Dolly Masilela, Mining Superintendent at Grootegeluk, who did a sterling job as Chairperson of the COALSAFE Committee.
CELEBRATING THE CONTRACTOR
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME’S
FIRST GRADUATION CEREMONY
In April 2022, Exxaro and the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) proudly hosted the first graduation ceremony for the Contractor Development Programme which first launched in November 2020.
In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Exxaro teamed up with GIBS to launch the Contractor Development Programme – a supplier development partnership which aims to support the empowerment of local Exxaro suppliers and ESD beneficiaries. The programme provided 30 companies, comprising 90 participants, from Exxaro’s host communities with business education and mentorship over the course of a year.
Exxaro and GIBS saw an opportunity to create a programme that would support
Exxaro’s suppliers in being innovative and strategic in the way they understand and conduct adaptable businesses and partnerships. As a result, participants from 30 companies graduated with invaluable skills that combined selected accredited unit standards, with customised mining and Exxaro-specific content to maximise the impact and relevance for participants.
The programme could not have come at a better time, having been launched against the backdrop of COVID-19 and its devastating effects on small businesses. In 2020, the unemployment rate increased from 28.74% to 35.3%, translating to around 7.9 million unemployed people in South Africa.

“The Contractor Development Programme proves to be an invaluable mentorship for its participants who will become tomorrow’s changemakers,” said Dr Lusapho Njenge, Manager: Enterprise and Supplier Development.
“We are immensely proud of all our cohorts from the programme. Their acquired skills will translate to advanced business practices and the empowerment of underprivileged communities through employment, thereby contributing to our country’s economic recovery,” concluded Dr Njenge.
