Twenty Metallurgy final-year students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) were exposed to the practical insights of the mining industry and Leeuwpan Mine as part of their Youth Day activities.
The purpose of the initiative was to provide the students with real-world exposure in support of their academic studies.
The visit began with a safety briefing, where students received PPE, including lab coats, boots, hard hats, earplugs, and reflectors, to ensure a safe tour of the mine. Students were given the opportunity to observe various processes involved in coal extraction and processing, like coal preparation, washing, dewatering, and waste management. This hands-on experience will go a long way to enhancing their understanding of the complexities and technological advancements within the field of metallurgy.
Peer-to-peer learning is essential in supporting young learners to make the right career choices. For this reason the Exxaro team organised a discussion session, where the Professional In Training’s (PITs) shared their learnings, experiences, and success stories and the students asked critical questions.
“Your generosity in accommodating our students has provided them with invaluable insights into their prospective field of work. Witnessing first-hand the practical applications of their studies has enriched their learning experience and motivated them towards their future careers. We look forward to future opportunities for collaboration and continued engagement.”

Driven by the desire to assist in addressing the numeracy crisis at schools, the Leeuwpan Mine recently launched its GoMaths programme at Swartklip Combined School. The purpose of the programme is to boost mathematics education in the area and empower learners to take their maths skills to the next level.
The launch event brought local educators, suppliers, and community leaders together to celebrate this significant step towards enhancing mathematics education.
Ronald Teffo, BU Manager at Leeuwpan, explained the importance of fostering strong numeracy skills in schools, while Lebang Nong from GoMaths highlighted how the programme aims to empower and support the young learners.

“Leeuwpan pledges to expand GoMaths by collaborating with schools and communities to ensure greater access and support students to excel in mathematics.”

Matla Mine collaborated with the Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) Head Office team and “I AM ENTREPRENEUR” service provider to mark the National Youth Month by hosting a funding readiness workshop for the youth in Ga-Nala.
The initiative, held on 25 June at the mine, was aimed at equipping local youth-owned SMMEs with insights on accessing business funding from various institutions. The workshop also provided the SMMEs with the tools and knowledge they need to manage and drive their businesses successfully.
Joseph Mbedzi and Keitumetse, representatives from I AM ENTREPRENEUR, emphasised the significance of comprehending the Business Model Canvas to attendees. The workshop attracted over 45 young entrepreneurs, culminating in a competition where participants pitched their business ideas. Three winners were awarded prizes totalling R23 000 to support their identified business needs and foster sustainable growth.
The event will go a long way to promoting economic transformation in the area, by
supporting youth-led SMMEs to create jobs and build sustainability in Matla’s host community.
