Matla also donated over 200 branded caps, scarves, gloves and beanies to the community.
What advice would you give other women in the mining industry who are facing obstacles and striving to achieve their goals?
“Thank you for your support. I see us going through this journey, and it’s going to be very exciting ahead,” said Dr Nombasa.

Leeuwpan marked Women’s Month with a stylish black-tie event hosted by Women in Mining at the Galagos Country Estate in Pretoria on 1 September.
The day-long gathering, hosted by TK Khumalo and Thuli Mayisela, was dedicated to uplifting and honouring women’s well-being and prosperity in all its dimensions – mental, financial, and overall wellness. Nthabiseng Padi from Bayport Financial Services encouraged women to nurture and safeguard their financial wealth, offering valuable insights to attain financial wellness. Dr Makatu emphasised the significance of women’s health and the practice of self-care. Transformational coach, Boniswa Ndladla, discussed why mental health is the one form of wealth that everyone should invest in.
The event also featured an array of enjoyable cultural activities, including traditional dances and a poetry recital.

Mentorship, like networking, can be a powerful catalyst for professional and personal growth, especially for women in mining. That’s why the conneXXion’s WiM committee hosted a special mentoring and networking breakfast in celebration of Women’s Day.
The half-day event included a speed-mentoring session, where mentees got the chance to have engagements with various mentors and get advice about their careers. The event concluded with a survey, which proved that more women are seeking mentoring and networking opportunities and gave the WiM team ideas on how to make their events even more valuable going forward.
