EXXARO
TAKES
APPROACH
to fraud
Fraud hurts individuals, business and businesses. That’s why we are committed to fighting fraud through the ongoing prevention, detection and investigation of all allegations within Exxaro. The Audit and Assurance team has received over 250 reports between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021 through Exxaro’s Hotline Reporting system, while 13 cases were reported directly to the team.
What action has been taken?
The good news is that, of all reported allegations, only 20% were found to be credible, which resulted in further action being taken, such as disciplinary inquiries, registering cases with the SAPS, and consequently arrests. All disciplinary inquiries resulted in guilty verdicts. One case, which resulted in a dismissal, was taken to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), where the Commissioner ruled in Exxaro’s favour. Exxaro also reported 94 criminal cases to SAPS, from which 22 arrests were made.
What types of fraud are being reported?
The impact of fraud goes beyond financial loss. It impacts the lives and careers of both victims and perpetrators. Exxaro will continue to take action against all forms of fraud to reinforce the message that the consequences of committing fraud or partaking in unethical behaviour greatly outweighs the assumed benefits.
