BELFAST MINE BOOSTS
LEARNER CONFIDENCE
WITH UNIFORM
DONATION

Belfast Mine donated school uniforms and shoes to Morelig Combined School, helping to address resource issues and boost learner confidence within the Emakhazeni Local Municipality.

The donation is just one of the many ways Belfast Mine aims to address some of the social challenges impacting its host communities, particularly within the Emakhazeni Local Municipality. The school faces many challenges that often lead to absenteeism and increased school dropout rates. Anna Malibe, Deputy Principal of Morelig Combined School, conveyed her appreciation to Exxaro, emphasising how these new school uniforms and shoes would help instil pride and confidence in the learners.

The mine’s dedication to fostering a thriving educational environment in its host communities is evident in its ongoing support for the Department of Education within the Emakhazeni Circuit.

“Witnessing the success of youth from neighbouring communities, facilitated by Exxaro’s support, fills us with great pride. For many, Exxaro represents a beacon of hope, offering opportunities for a brighter future.”

BELFAST KICKS OFF SCHOOL YEAR WITH 15 NEW
SCHOOL UNIFORMS

To kick off the school year, Belfast Mine donated school uniforms to 15 school learners at Siyifunile Secondary School, as part of a pilot programme started by its Junior Pioneer Programme (JPP).

The JPP is passionate about empowering youth through education. That’s why, in addition to exposing young learners to digital skills, the programme also helps alleviate the financial strain on parents by providing essential school attire at the start of the academic year. The hard work is already paying off. Many pupils in the programme have improved their marks, especially in maths and science.

“We have witnessed considerable progress among our learners since the inception of the Junior Pioneer Programme. As they embark on their journey, we extend our best wishes and trust in their ability to make informed decisions in life.”
Sechaba Tselana, Community Development Specialist

As the JPP pilot draws to a close, Exxaro remains committed to supporting student success and potential career paths within the Emakhazeni Local Municipality. Dumisa Mtshali, Principal of Siyifunile Secondary School, praised Exxaro for addressing the needs of its young learners with passion and dedication saying, “with continued efforts our learners are poised for a promising future”.

HELPS
LEARNERS
PREPARE FOR
GRADE R

Cotlands has been selected to implement the project. Four Toy Librarians from the Lephalale communities have been appointed and trained to execute the programme.

What is Cotlands?

Cotlands is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) committed to fostering a more equitable society in South Africa by providing access to play-based early learning opportunities, ensuring children are well-prepared for formal schooling and future success.

We demonstrated our support by handing over a mobile Toy Library to Cotlands, helping to enhance the accessibility of learning materials in ECD facilities across Lephalale. Exxaro also donated Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment, furniture, and various appliances needed to support the programme, as part of our commitment to supporting early childhood development in its host communities.

Grootegeluk is creating a self-sustained Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre that will help improve the performance of learners starting Grade R, in line with our Social Impact Strategy.

The lack of school readiness is a key issue across the district, often stemming from inadequate care and stimulation during a child’s early developmental years. The new ECD Centre will address this by catering to 49 creches and early childhood care centres in Marapong, Onverwacht, Ga-Seleka, and Ga-Shongoane.
