From 3 to 6 February 2025, Exxaro proudly participated in the 2025 Investing in African Mining Indaba, engaging in critical discussions to shape the future of mining in Africa. Under the theme “Future-Proofing African Mining, Today”, our leadership contributed to key conversations on technology, energy transition, sustainability, and strategic partnerships – reinforcing our commitment to responsible growth and long-term impact.
Key Highlights from Mining Indaba 2025
Building Climate-Resilient Communities
Chief Sustainable Impact Officer, Mongezi Veti, joined a panel discussion on the urgency of future-proofing African communities against climate change. He emphasised how Exxaro is proactively balancing environmental responsibility with economic resilience, ensuring our sustainability commitments extend beyond compliance to create meaningful impact. Collaboration between industry players, government, and local communities was highlighted as essential for achieving long-term, sustainable change.
Enabling Africa’s Energy Transition
Chief Growth Officer, Richard Lilleike, led a discussion on Africa’s energy transition, reinforcing Exxaro’s commitment to a low-carbon future. He highlighted how our diversification strategy is reducing carbon intensity while ensuring energy security and economic inclusivity. The panel explored how mining companies must navigate the shift towards renewables, integrate sustainable energy solutions, and form strategic partnerships to ensure a just transition.
Innovation & Technology as Drivers of Sustainable Mining
Chief Technology Officer, Johan Meyer, emphasised the role of digital transformation in optimising operations, reducing environmental impact, and driving Zero Harm. He underscored the importance of learning from other industries to accelerate safer, smarter, and more sustainable mining, reinforcing that emerging technologies are crucial for competitiveness and long-term growth.
Bringing Exxaro’s Story to Life
Our interactive exhibition stand drew significant attention, showcasing Exxaro’s transformation journey through a dynamic hologram featuring themed daily messaging. This innovative display highlighted our vision, diversification strategy, people strategy, and social impact commitment—solidifying our role in shaping the future of mining.
Our Professionals-in-Training (PITs) welcomed and engaged visitors at the stand, offering insights into Exxaro’s journey and strategic vision. To enhance engagement, we introduced daily knowledge-based competitions, allowing attendees to test their understanding of Exxaro’s initiatives while gaining a deeper appreciation of our impact on the industry.
Looking Ahead
As we concluded an impactful week, our Acting CEO and Finance Director, Riaan Koppeschaar, reflected on the vital role our people play in powering possibility in Africa and beyond. The insights and partnerships gained during the event will continue to shape our journey as we future-proof our industry, drive meaningful impact, and lay the foundation for a more sustainable future.
